The bounding communes of Noli are Finale Ligure, Spotorno and Vezzi Portio.
Noli was an independent republic from 1193 until 1797, the smallest one under the five so-called "Maritime Republics". In 1239 it became seat of a bishop; later on the diocese has been united with that of Savona as the Diocese of Savona-Noli. The Napoleonic invasion in 1797 put an end to Noli's sovereignty.
The coat of arms' colour is a white cross on a red field.
It is a town and comune of considerable antiquity and has an ancient church of S. Paragorio, once the cathedral, a Romanesque basilica dating from the 11th century with interesting works of art.
