Noah (name)

Noah is a given name and surname, possibly derived from the Biblical figure meaning "Rest" in Hebrew. However, the origin of the name is far from certain. The Bible implies that it means 'rest' in Genesis 5:29, "and he called his name Noah, saying, this same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands." Another explanation is that it is derived from the Hebrew root meaning "to comfort" (Nahum) with the final consonant dropped.[1]

Noah is a top 10 name for a boy in the United States. In 2009, the name was the 9th most popular, with 17,061 births. This was the highest rank it has ever been since the Social Security Administration began tracking the data.[2]
