Up to 2010 Njombe was among districts of Iringa Region of Tanzania before it was appointed to be an independent region, adding to the other regions that existed before. It is in the era when The President of the United Republic of Tanzania was His Excellence Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete. Njombe as a Region would now consist of the districts of Makete and Ludewa which existed before and the newly formed Wanging'ombe District.
As region, it would now consist of Njombe District and Njombe Town Councils and the District Councils of Ludewa, Makete and Wanging'ombe.

The name Njombe originates from a name of a tree species that was by then dominant in the place called Mdzombe, this tree species has however been distinct.
According to the 2002 Tanzania National Census, the population of the Njombe District was 420,348.[1] A large population belong to the Christian religion and little Muslims and some Local Religion like the Wasumwa in Makete District.
The main economic activities of the People of Njombe include cultivation of food crops. Njombe is one the largest producers of Irish Potatoes, Maize and partly beans.
As for cash crops, timber and electric poles are produced at large amounts. It has come up of recent that a large population has embarked onto planting trees for timber. The common tree species grown here include Pines at a very large percent and a little of Eucalyptus and Cypress.
Timber is sold directly to Dar es Salaam where there is the larger market and the other is locally sold for carpentry, building and construction activities.
The Njombe District is administratively divided into 25 wards:
