Nipani ( Kannada: ನಿಪ್ಪಾಣಿ, Marathi: निपाणी) is a town and a city municipal council in Belgaum district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Nippani is the largest urban center in Chikkodi Taluka of Belagavi District. It is located at a distance of 74 km from the district headquarters, 23 km from the taluka headquarters and 40 km from Kolhapur city in Maharashtra State.

Geography and climate

Since Nipani is close to branches of western ghats it enjoys a good rainy season. Summer is hot but temperature do not reach levels where it causes discomfort. Winter is pleasant and enjoyable. Temperature ranges from 40 to 16 degrees Celsius (104 to 61 °F).

Sugarcane, tobacco and vegetables are the main crops in and around this region.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Nippani had a population of 58,061. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Nipani has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 64%. In Nipani, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Near Nipani there are many places to visit. A few of them are Samadhi math, Stavnidhi temple, Ramling, Mallikarjun temple ADI, Laxmi temple. Again, on the outskirts of Nipani there are many places to visit. A day's excursion in Nipani is really enjoyable. There are plenty of options for dining. A very famous side dish is chapati bhaji and also Misal Pav. Kannada is the administrative language and widely spoken in the place along with Marathi.

Business

Nipani is noted for its cultivation and marketing of tobacco. The tobacco is mainly used for making of Beedi.In NIPANI there are many tobacco merchants. Nipani is also famous for its garments market. Nipani also does a brisk business in vegetables. Farmers from neighbouring villages bring their fresh vegetables to Nipani market every day for selling.

Education

Nipani has good colleges and schools. Most of the students who come to this city for education are from neighbouring villages like Benadi, Lakhanapur, Jatrat, Akkol, Padalihal, Nanganur, Shripevadi, Aadi, Murgod, Solankur, Saundalaga, Pangire B, etc.

Many of the students from this sub-urban place have travelled, worked and a few have even settled abroad. Indirectly, these students have helped the Nipani's business to flourish when they transfer their hard earned money to their families not to forget the contributions made by neighbouring villages and outsiders, who have helped to keep Nipani a busy town. Nipani is well known destination for higher education. Courses like BBA, BCA, BHMS are conducted by various institutes.

Though there are few institutes giving quality education, it still need to improve in this regard. As all the talent is going out of city to learn, but for some this may not be affordable and their dream of higher education will stop there. However, banks are lenient towards granting bank loans, also the education government programs are helping to acquire higher education. For example Gourihar Kulkarni from Padalihal village took education loan from Union Bank of India, the loan helped him to obtain Master of Science degree from the prestigious UK university.
