Nikon announced the lens on 9 February 2009.[1] It is the first prime lens released by Nikon specifically designed for Nikon DX format DSLR cameras that is both rectilinear and supports autofocus on the Nikon D40, Nikon D40X, Nikon D60, Nikon D3000, Nikon D3100, Nikon D5000, and Nikon D5100. The first prime lens released for the DX format was the AF DX Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G ED.[2]
The lens is intended to be an inexpensive prime lens for owners of Nikon DX format DSLR cameras, in particular the D40, D40x, D60, D3000/D3100, D5000/D5100 and D90 and also D7000.[3]
