Laudrup focused on playing golf in his youth, before moving to the United States to play football (soccer) alongside his studies at North Carolina Wesleyan College.[3] He started his senior career when he returned to Denmark, and signed a semi-professional contract with Danish 2nd Division team Ølstykke FC in January 2009.[4] When his contract expired after six months, Nicolai moved back to his childhood club FC Øresund in August 2009, playing as an amateur in the Zealand Series.[5] In early 2010, he moved to Danish 1st Division club Lyngby Boldklub.[6] On 20 June 2010 signed with Fremad Amager.[7]
Laudrup has spent months fine-tuning his game with Glasgow coach Adam Hunter, who helped Paul Lawrie to his Open Championship win at Carnoustie in 1999.[8]
He is the son of the former Danish international forward, Brian Laudrup, and Mette Laudrup[9], nephew to the former FC Barcelona and Real Madrid player Michael Laudrup, grandson to Danish international Finn Laudrup and his cousins are professional footballers Mads and Andreas Laudrup.[10]
