NY 244 begins at an intersection with NY 19 in the village of Belmont. The route heads northeast on Milton Street, concurrent to NY 19 Truck as the street crosses over the Genesee River. On the opposite bank, NY 19 Truck turns southeast onto Greenwich Street while NY 244 continues northeastward out of Belmont and into the town of Amity. In Amity, NY 244 becomes Mainville Road and runs mostly parallel to Phillips Creek. The route continues to follow the small waterway northeast and eastward through a lightly populated valley surrounding the creek into the town of Ward, where the creek ends in the hamlet of Phillips Creek.[3]
East of Phillips Creek, NY 244 proceeds across hilly terrain to the village of Alfred, a community situated around Alfred University and SUNY Alfred. NY 244 bypasses most of the village; instead, it connects to downtown by way of North Main Street,[3] here designated but not signed as NY 960B.[4] Outside of the village, NY 244 reenters the town of Alfred and heads through a narrow valley surrounding Canacadea Creek to Alfred Station, where it ends at a junction with NY 21.[3]
NY 244 was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York and has not been altered since.[1]
The entire route is in Allegany County.
