Netherne-on-the-Hill is a small village in Surrey, England, built on the site of the Victorian Netherne lunatic asylum. The village is situated in the borough of Reigate and Banstead. Local amenities include a swimming pool and a leisure centre for Netherne residents.
Netherne Mental Hospital opened in 1903 and closed in 1994. The hospital was known to be progressive in both its treatment of, and rehabilitation from, mental illness throughout the period in which it operated.
The former hospital estate was sold by the Secretary of State for Health to MJ Gleeson in 1995, with development of a new village commencing shortly afterwards. The Administration block, chapel, convalescent villas and echelon design ward blocks have been converted by MJ Gleeson. The Water Tower was sold on by MJ Gleeson to a company called Falcon for redevelopment.
Now living in an attractive community, Netherne residents can enjoy a strong community feel which has been strengthened following the opening of the village hall in 2011.
