Naprej zastava slave

"Naprej zastava slave" (Forward, Flag of Glory) is a Slovene poem that was used as the Slovenian national anthem between 1918 and 1990.

It was written by Simon Jenko and set to music by Davorin Jenko on 16 May 1860.

When Slovenia became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (Yugoslavia), the poem was included in the Yugoslav national anthem, in a medley including the Serbian anthem "Bože pravde" and the Croatian "Lijepa naša domovino." With the establishment of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1945, the royal Yugoslav anthem was replaced by "Hej Slovani". "Naprej zastava slave" continued to be used as the anthem of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia. In 1990, the official name of the state was changed to Republic of Slovenia and "Zdravljica" replaced "Naprej, zastava Slave" as the national anthem. "Naprej zastava slave" remains the official anthem of the Slovenian military.

Davorin Jenko, the composer of the song's melody, also composed the Serbian anthem "Bože pravde" (God of Justice).

In Slovene

Naprej zastava Slave

Naprej zastava Slave,
na boj junaška kri
za blagor očetnjave
naj puška govori!

Z orožjem in desnico,
nesimo vragu grom,
zapisat v kri pravico,
ki terja jo naš dom.

Naprej zastava Slave,
na boj junaška kri,
za blagor očetnjave
naj puška govori!

Draga mati je prosila,
roke okol vrata vila,
je plakala moja mila,
tu ostani ljubi moj!

Zbogom mati, ljuba zdrava,
mati mi je očetnjava,
ljuba moja čast in slava,
hajdmo, hajdmo, zanjo v boj!

Naprej zastava Slave,
na boj junaška kri,
za blagor očetnjave
naj puška govori!

Naprej! Naprej!

In English

Forward, Flag of Glory

Forward!, flag of glory,
To battle, heroic blood!
For the benefice of the fatherland
Let the rifle speak!

With weapon and right hand
Let's bring thunder to the devil
Let's write in blood the justice
Owed to our home.

Forward!, flag of glory,
To battle, heroic blood!
For the benefice of the fatherland
Let the rifle speak!

My dear mother begged,
hands clutched 'round my neck,
my dearest one she wept,
remain here, my beloved!

Farewell mother, hale and loved
the Fatherland is my Mother
honour and glory are my beloved,
Let's go! Let's go! to battle for her!

Forward!, flag of glory,
To battle, heroic blood!
For the benefice of the fatherland
Let the rifle speak!

Forward! Forward!
