History

Naast was formed in Joinville-le-Pont in 2004. The band originally had just two members, neighbors Gustave (guitar and vocals) and Nicolas (drums). Their first concert was played in a pub, as a support act before The Parisians played. Interest from Paris then began to be grow in the group.

In 2005 Nicolas and Gustave were joined by Clod (bass guitar, keyboard) and Lucas, known as Laka (guitar). Their concerts began to attract more and more fans, but they also received criticism from various groups. Still, Naast has enthusiastic support from magazines and individuals alike. The magazine Rock&Folk, journalist Philippe Manoeuvre and Les Inrockuptibles have stood by them in the past.

The group continued to develop further, taking inspiration from some of their idols by all adopting the Naast patronym (despite not actually being related). This follows in the footsteps of bands like The Ramones or The White Stripes (However, in the case of The White Stripes, the members' surnames actually were the same).

The master track of Mauvais Garçon, off their debut album L'Antichambre, appears in the video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock as a bonus track.

The group split up in 2009.

Critics

Naast was criticized from their debut for utilizing a personal connection and manipulating the critics of music reviews. The father of Gustave, Paul Rambali had been working for the magazine Rock & Folk as well as for the magazine NME where Naast was introduced. The editor of the magazine denied the suspicion of favoring Naast for the reason of having attachment to Paul Rambali as a former colleague.[1]

In terms of aesthetics, the style yéyé of their music is widely shared with other groups in the new scene of the french rock, such as Plasticines and BB Brunes.

The critics had upsurged due to an accident after a troubled concert at Bègles in March 2007, where the singer is attacked and replicates by wounding his aggressor in the eye with a fork. However, the boy quickly recovered 10/10 of his visions. The reason given by Gustave was that the boy menaced him during their performance and it was a self-defense. He also made a formal complaint against the boy.
