The Nadirshaw Eduljee Dinshaw University of Engineering and Technology (NED University) is a public university in Karachi, Pakistan. It was founded in 1922 as an engineering college, making it the oldest school in Pakistan for educating graduate engineers.

Contents

Faculties and departments

The university offers graduate and post-graduate degrees in engineering disciplines. It has seven main faculties:

NED Academy

To provide educational and professional training to existing professionals, NED University established NED Academy.[1] The academy has two sections:

CCEE

CCEE offers courses for Engineering, Information Technology, Management and Conversion Programs. Short and long duration courses are offered in these subjects.

CMPP

CMPP offers courses in multidisciplinary subjects such as quality and safety.

Library

The library serves as the university's and the region's reference library of engineering and technology. The collection includes general circulation books, reference books, encyclopedias, handbooks, periodicals, research journals, government and archive documents, microfilms, microfiche, audio/video cassettes, CD-ROM databases and software.

The library has computerized retrieval of bibliographic databases containing references to thousands of articles, books, proceedings, technical reports and statistics. The library is fully computerized, providing online search facility and book management. The library provides students with access to online research paper collections such as the IEEEXPLORE, ACM, and Springer.

Laboratories

All departments have their own set of laboratories primarily employed in teaching undergraduate students. Every department has approximately five to six labs, with equipment and facilities for their field. Apart from their own labs, students benefit from multi-disciplinary courses for which lab training is conducted in laboratories of other departments.

Internet service

The Internet Center is equipped with four Dell servers one each for DNS, Proxy, Web and Mail; it has Cisco Routers and Access Servers, with Cisco Firewall and US Robotics Modems. Computers are connected to each other through high-speed data communications network forming the Internet backbone. The backbone for the internet is taken from Global One, which has a parallel backbone to the NSF resulting in very fast responses. The network has been designed so that educational institutions and corporate institutions can also be connected using high speed lines.

The university has a video lecture series where lectures from international professors are attended by a large number of students.

Other facilities

Facilities include an air-conditioned auditorium of 600 seating capacity, one hostel for 200 students, Medical Center, mosque, student cafeterias, gymnasium and outdoor sports facilities including grounds for cricket and football.

Industrial liaison

The Directorate of Industrial Liaison works to securing internship and job opportunities for NED students and graduates. Almost all students get the opportunity of doing an industrial internship in their summer and winter breaks during their third year of undergraduate studies.

Research

Although the main focus of the university had been on its teaching programs, the university has started M.Eng. by Research and PhD programs. The university publishes a research journal - NED University Journal of Research.[2]

Scholarships

The university offers Need cum Merit scholarships, and distinguished student scholarships for students securing top three positions in class.[3] Most of these are provided by private foundations, NGOs, and Alumni. The two brilliant students of NED University Yusra and Zohaib have recently developed software for monitoring electricity.[4]

Admission criteria

Like other professional institutes, NED administers an entrance test of 100 multiple choice questions in four sections. The passing cutoff is 40%, however the marks obtained in the test have no effect on the field of engineering the student is admitted to study. One major issue is the test for color blinded people. Disciplines like electrical engineer or electronics engineering are not offered to them.-->

Events

The University also hosts events such as Musical events, Sports Events and IT events. Its famous IT event of Pakistan is ITEC (Information Technology Exhibition & Competition), it is an annual mega IT event organized by the students of university's Department of Computer Science and Information Technology. It is an all Pakistan competition with the participation of almost all the major universities, sending their skilled students with IT niche.[5]
