Mötschwil is a municipality in the administrative district of Emmental in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Mötschwil was first mentioned in 1328 as Mötschwile. Until 1910 it was known as Mötschwil-Schleumen.[3]
Mötschwil has an area, as of 2009[update], of 2.95 km2 (1.14 sq mi). Of this area, 1.87 km2 (0.72 sq mi) or 63.4% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.89 km2 (0.34 sq mi) or 30.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.16 km2 (0.062 sq mi) or 5.4% is settled (buildings or roads).[4]
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 2.7% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.7%. 30.2% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 53.2% is used for growing crops and 8.8% is pastures, while 1.4% is used for orchards or vine crops.[4]
Mötschwil includes the village Mötschwil (with Grüt) and Schleumen as well as the hamlet Kreuzweg (Schulhaus).
Mötschwil has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 137.[1] As of 2007[update], 13.2% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 2.3%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (99.1%), with the rest speaking English.
In the election the most popular party was the SVP which received 52.5% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the Green Party (13%), the SPS (9.9%) and the local small right-wing parties (8.7%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 13.4% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 70.5% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 16.1%. In Mötschwil about 17.1% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
Mötschwil has an unemployment rate of 27%. As of 2005[update], no one was involved in the primary economic sector. 11 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 5 businesses in this sector. 11 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with no local businesses in this sector.[5]
