Myrothamnaceae is the botanical name for a family of flowering plants. Such a family has been recognized by most taxonomists, having been included in order Hamamelidales in the Cronquist system[1]. The APG II system (2003) includes Myrothamnaceae in Gunneraceae but allows for the optional segregation of this family from Gunneraceae[2]. The family then consists of one genus, Myrothamnus, assigned to the order Gunnerales in the clade core eudicots. This represents a change from the APG system, of 1998, which firmly recognized two separate families, unplaced as to order[3]. The association of Myrothamnus with Gunnera is a recent one, having been supported by molecular systematic studies. As these relationships have been further explored, APG III (2009) has chosen to affirm the narrower circumscription and these two families are now considered distinct[4].
