Murder of Daniel Pollen

Daniel Pollen
Died Romford, London, England
Cause of death Stabbing (murder)

Daniel Pollen was a 20 year old English university student who was murdered in an unprovoked attack in 2005. Daniel was stabbed in the heart and killed as he and his friend Andrew Griffiths waited for a lift home from Daniel's sister in the Brewery shopping centre in Romford, east London. The attack was caught on cctv, the footage was then released by the Pollen family in order to raise awareness of knife crime.[1]

The Attack

Daniel Pollen and his friend Andrew Griffiths had been celebrating Mr Griffiths' 20th birthday and were waiting on bicycle railings for Mr Pollen's sister to pick them up in the early hours of July 8, 2005. They were suddenly attacked by Timmy Sullivan, 19, 25-year-old Michael Onokah and 17 year old Michael Lynch. Andrew Griffiths was first punched in the head by Sullivan who then moved away from the scene. CCTV showed Daniel Pollen raising his hands presumably trying to calm the attackers down. Lynch then attacked Pollen punching him in the face (which broke his jaw) and stabbing him once in the heart. Pollen could be seen on camera holding his chest immediately after being fatally stabbed. Griffiths was stabbed several times in the front and back though he survived the attack. Daniel Pollen lost consciousness after he was stabbed and died shortly after.

Sentencing

Timmy Sullivian and Michael Onokah were both convicted of wounding with intent and sentenced to 5 years. Micheal Lynch was convicted of murder and sentenced to 15 years.[2]
