It was formed in 1805, when Napoleon Bonaparte occupied the Republic of Genoa. Its capital was Savona. It was divided into the arrondissements of Savona, Acqui Terme, Porto Maurizio and Ceva. It was disbanded after the defeat of Napoleon in 1814. Its territory is presently divided between the Italian provinces Savona, Alessandria, Imperia and Cuneo.
