Monroe is a city in Walton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 13,381 at the 2008 census. The city is the county seat of Walton County, Georgia.[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.5 square miles (27 km2), of which, 10.4 square miles (27 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) of it (1.05%) is water.
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 11,407 people, 4,287 households, 2,983 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,101.3 people per square mile (425.1/km²). There were 4,637 housing units at an average density of 447.7 per square mile (172.8/km²). There were 4,287 households out of which 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 25.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.07.
In the city the population was spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,500, and the median income for a family was $31,568. Males had a median income of $30,717 versus $23,028 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,636 (2008). About 19.8% of families and 22.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 34.2% of those under age 18 and 17.1% of those age 65 or over.
The racial makeup of the city is 54.69% White, 42.24% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. 2.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The Walton County School District holds grades pre-school to grade twelve, that consists of nine elementary schools, three middle schools, and three high schools.[5] The district has 675 full-time teachers and over 10,368 students.[6]
The east-end of the City of Monroe on Anisa Drive is the location for the headquarters of several corporations, including Angel Food Ministries, a Christian-based not-for-profit food relief ministry[7]; Unisia of Georgia Corporation; Tucker Door and Trim[8]; Arkansas-headquartered Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. southeast Walmart Distribution Center [9]; the Leggett & Platt Corporation[10], and others.
