Mohanur is a Town panchayat in Namakkal district of Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Mohanur Panchyat Union includes Mohanur Town,Pettapalayam, Manappalli, Kumarapalayam, Sengappalli, Ediyar, Perumandam Palayam, Ariyur, Aniyapuram, Valayapatti. It is linked to Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Erode, and Karur by Road.

Geography

Mohanur is a metropolitan city situated at the southern most part of Namakkal district, on the bank of river Cauvery. It is located at .[1] It has an average elevation (MSL) of 143 metres (469 feet). Located near Namakkal (18 km) and Karur (13 km), the special feature of Mohanur is that it is the only place where the river Cauvery runs from north to south. It is also famous for historic temples which are visited by lakhs of Hindus from all over the state. The Salem Co-Operative sugar mill is located in Mohanur. Navaladiyan Kovil which is located in the border of Mohanur and Kumaripalayam.

As of 2001 India census,[2] Mohanur had a population of 12,468. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Mohanur has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81% and female literacy is 66%. In Mohanur, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age. Mohanur is a town with many schools and a college. There is a police station for the nearby villages. It also has many hospitals. mohanur-aKaruppannaswami exists of his own. The antiquity of the temple dates back to 2000 years. The Swayambu Murthy is in a pit in the temple. There is a dry tree behind the swayambu called Pattamaram meaning that the tree is dry. It is also said that the Chera King Senguttuvan performed the field puja here before marching on invasion to north. The Chellandiamman shrine is very popular. The pujas performed here are of non-vegetarian nature.

History:

mohanur-cLord Shiva in the form of Sivasakthi had come down as a watch God in the name of Karuppannaswami. There is also a spot here called Uppiliappan Thittu. A king called Mohur Pazhayan ruling Mohanur in the past, took all the decision after praying to Navaladian. He declared the nearby Neem Tree as the Watch Tree of the region. After the invasion of Senguttuvan, the Naval tree became dry. As the deity was near this tree, He was called Pattamarathaian. As he was also near the Naval tree, the deity is also known as Navaladian.
