Miranshah (Urdu: میران شاہ) is the capital or headquarters of North Waziristan in Pakistan. It is the site of a town, which has s small airfield that was built by the British for World War II. The area in which Miranshah sits is extremely dangerous mainly due to Taliban activities and U.S. Drone attacks.

Topography

The town is located in a wide valley surrounded by mountains. The nearest city to Miranshah is Khost in neighboring Afghanistan.

Governance

The New York Times reported in September 2011 that the Haqqani network had established a "ministate" in Miranshah with courts, tax offices and madrassas.[1]

Educational institutions in the area are in poor conditions compare to other parts of Pakistan. The city has one government degree college, government high school and a public high school for boys. There is also a government college for women.
