Mikkeller was founded in 2006 by home brewers Mikkel Borg Bjergsø and Kristian Klarup Keller with the intention of "challeng[ing] the Danes’ taste buds with intense taste adventures."[3] Mikkeller found some inspiration for their widely-varied, edgy brewing approach "on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean where the American breweries aren’t afraid to play and break all the rules."[4]
Mikeller has brewed over 100 different beers in a wide variety of styles.
Mikkeller won Danish Brewery of the Year in its inaugural year, 2006, and again in 2008.[5]
Mikkeller does not offer tours of its brewery, as it has none, but it does have a home base of sorts in its Mikkeller Bar,[6] in Copenhagen designed by Danish design agency Femmes Regionales.[7] The Mikkeller Bar offers 20 taps, cheese, and other snacks.
