Microlepidogaster and M. perforatus were described in 1889 by Carl H. All of the species other than M. perforatus previously referred to as Microlepidogaster have now been allocated to the genus Hisonotus.[2]

M. bourguyi is a species inquirenda of the family Loricariidae.[1]

M. perforatus is distributed in the Carandaí River in the upper Paraná River basin of Brazil.[1]
