Microlepidogaster and M. perforatus were described in 1889 by Carl H. Eigenmann and Rosa Smith Eigenmann.[1] Hisonotus has until recently, been considered as synonymous with Microlepidogaster, although they are now recognized as separate and valid taxa. All of the species other than M. perforatus previously referred to as Microlepidogaster have now been allocated to the genus Hisonotus.[2]
