Microbulbifer is a genus of Proteobacteria found in sea water. Members of this genus can degrade complex carbohydrates such as cellulose, alginate, and chitin. Recently, Microbulbifer degredans was renamed Saccharophagus degredans. Because of the diverse enzymatic activities found associated with this microorganism, it has been sequenced by the Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute (JGI) [1]
