In his only match for the Metros, Butler scored the game winner off a Daniel Hernández cross in extra time against Tampa Bay.[3] In 1998 Butler led the nation in goals (19) in the United Soccer League D3 Professional League playing for the Western Mass Poineers, out of Ludlow Massachusetts. During his 4 years at the University of Massachusetts he held 3 separate career records in goals scored, assists and overall points.
