Throughout his cricketing career, he adapted himself to fit into the slots in the team. At the very beginnings of his cricketing days, he played primarily as an off spin bowler.[1] The day before his trial with Warwickshire, Dermot Reeve (their captain at the time) saw him keeping wicket for Cumbria, which he did when they were short.[1] He spent his days at Warwickshire as a wicket-keeper batsman, and in five years there scored 640 runs at 20.00.[2]
Burns moved to Somerset, and became a middle order batsman, who bowled useful medium pace.[1][3] In both 2002 and 2003, he passed 1000 first-class runs for Somerset,[2] and he captained them in 2003 and 2004.
