Sindh University Engineering College was established in 1963 as a constituent college of University of Sindh (then spelt 'Sind').
Mehran University offers courses leading to Bachelors' degrees in 17 disciplines. There are 15 degrees in Engineering. The remaining two are non-engineering degrees in related fields: Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) and Bachelor of City & Regional Planning (B.CRP). The undergraduate disciplines and institutes under their respective faculty are given below:
The postgraduate courses were started in 1978 leading to the M.E. degree, initially, in three branches. At present, courses are offered in the specialized fields of:
Some courses are offered full time during the day while others are part-time, conducted during the evenings. Sometimes, a course may be dropped in a given year because of an inadequate number of students. The degrees to be awarded may be post-graduate diploma (P.G.D.), Master of Engineering (M.E.), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), depending upon the quality and quantity of the research/work completed.
Postgraduate studies and research are organized by departments as well as the following specialized institutes.
MUET ranks as the 5th best engineering degree-awarding institutions in the country [1] and attracts foreign students, mostly from South Asian, Middle Eastern and African countries.
Mehran University has published the quarterly Mehran University Research Journal of Engineering and Technology (MURJ) since January 1982; the journal is being abstracted at Pakistan Scientific Research Information Center (PASTIC), Islamabad; National Transportation Research Board, USA; American Concrete Institute, USA; HRIS, USA; NTIS, USA; National Library of Congress, USA; and INSPEC, UK, among other catalogues.
The university's facilities include a central library with more than 80,000 books, fully furnished 1000-seat auditorium, seven student hostels and one teachers hostel, housing society for employees, transport, industry liaison, English language center, a medical centre, mosques, cafeterias, a cricket ground and other indoor and outdoor sports facilities.
Most of the laboratories and workshops of the teaching departments are properly equipped and practical; demonstration training is imparted to the students wherever applicable. Continuous efforts are ongoing to upgrade these facilities for the practical training and new equipment is acquired for this purpose. Additionally, training to the concerned staff is organized in and outside the university. In some cases, where the training facilities are not available, students are sent to suitable institutes in Karachi or elsewhere to undergo training. Every department has been provided personal computers, e-mail and Internet facilities for the training and use of students and teaching staff.
Hostel facilities are available for about 1,100 students on the campus which are walking distance from the teaching departments. These hostels are equipped with necessary facilities including bathrooms, reading rooms, game rooms, dining halls, etc.
Two hostels are under construction: one for boys and one for girls.
