Footnotes: Frequency Comparisons[1]

McLaughlin or MacLaughlin ( /məˈklɔːxlɨn/) is a surname of Irish and Scottish origin. The name is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic Mac Lochlainn ("son of Lochlann").[2]

The McLaughlins, originally belonging to the Cenél nEógain, are closely related to the O'Neill dynasty. Two kings of Ireland were Domnall Ua Lochlainn and Muirchertach Mac Lochlainn.

The Clan Maclachlan of Scotland are also related to the O'Neills but in fact are not of precisely the same lineage as the Irish McLaughlins. They are commonly confused in any case.

In Gaelic, the word Lochlainn means 'of the lakes' and refers to the Scandinavians (Vikings) from the West of Norway.

Further adding to the confusion, some of the Irish McLaughlins were originally O'Melaghlins – descendants of the King of Meath and later High King of Ireland, Máel Sechnaill mac Domnaill (Máel Sechnaill II).[3]
