Tyler, a resident of Lakewood, Colorado,[2] is a small-business owner, having run three technology consulting companies — most recently, The Star Group.[4] He has served on the Airport Finance and Development Committee, appointed by Denver Mayor Federico Pena, and the Colorado Small Business Council, appointed by Governor Roy Romer. Tyler also helped found Denver's small business incubator and helped lead Denver's Small Business Development Center.[5] Tyler served as House District 23 chairman for the Democratic Party in 2006,[2] played a central role in Rep. Gwyn Green's successful campaigns in 2004 and 2006,[4] and has participated in Leadership Jefferson County and the Lakewood Citizens Planning Academy.[5]
When Rep. Gwyn Green announced her resignation from the legislature in April 2009, she suggested Tyler as one of several possible successors;[6] he was the first candidate to announce his interest in the seat. A vacancy committee, composed of Democratic Party precinct officers and local elected officials, was convened to choose a replacement on May 27, 2009,[2] and selected Tyler.[4] Tyler was sworn in as a member of the state legislature on June 4, 2009.[7]
