Matthew Henson Middle School (MHMS) is a public middle school located in Pomonkey, Maryland in Charles County.
The school was originally dedicated in 1957 as Pomonkey High School, a segregated black junior/senior high school. After Charles County Public Schools were integrated in 1966, students from the Bryans Road, Maryland area who had attended Lackey Junior/Senior High School attended Pomonkey High School. When the current Henry E. Lackey High School was completed in 1969, this Pomonkey building was then rededicated as a middle school. It is named for Matthew Henson, once resident in Charles County.[2]
The school mascot is a Huskie Dog, chosen in honor of Matthew Henson and his arctic explorations. Throughout the school year, boys and girls take part in athletics, including archery, basketball, volleyball, and track and field events.[3] The students compete in these events with students from the other county middle schools.
