Mattan is a town and a notified area committee in Anantnag district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
As of 2001[update] India census,[1] Mattan had a population of 6,367. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Mattan has an average literacy rate of 54%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 66%, and female literacy is 42%. In Mattan, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Mattan has a Hindu majority and spiritual history. Kashmiri Pandit Late Shri Badri Nath Sidha put an extraordinary effort into bringing down the rate of illiteracy The people of Mattan still remember this man and they are really missing him. Now Deepak Sidha, his grandson, is working in his footsteps. He has written a number of articles on living standards of Kashmiri Pandits of Mattan. He is a well-known writer in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. He wrote poems as well.
