Marcano

Marcano family name originated in Spain. It was a military family that came to the New World with Christopher Columbus. The Family later grew and spread throughout the Caribbean and South America, where the surname became rooted in the countries of Puerto Rico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Cuba.

The Marcano Brothers

Marcano is the last name of four brothers that fought in the La Guerra de los Diez Años (aka Ten Years' War; 1868–1878). They are originally from Bani, Peravia, Dominican Republic, and settled in Manzanillo, Cuba. They are the children of Felix Marcano-Begazo y Guerrero (an attorney and prosecutor in the Supreme Court of Santo Domingo) and Maria de la O Alvarez y Soto-Ladron de Guevara.

• Luis Marcano-Alvarez was born in Bani, Peravia, Dominican Republic, on September 29, 1831 and died March 12, 1870 in Cuba. He was a Captain in Santo Domingo and an owner of a prosperous sawmill. He was made a General of the Cuban liberation army by Carlos Manuel de Cespedes in 1868 and lead an army of 300 men. In October 1868 he took over he city of Bayamo. He is treacherously assassinated by Pedro Hall on March 12, 1870. He was married to the sister of Modesto Diaz, Lorenza.

• Francisco Marcano-Alvarez born 1833 in Bani, Peravia, Dominican Republic, and died January 26, 1868 by execution by the Spanish government in Santiago de Cuba. in the Cuban War of Independence under the command of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes and was buried in Jiguani, Bayamo, Cuba. He was made a Brigadier General of the Cuban liberation army by Carlos Manuel de Cespedes.

• Felix Maria Marcano-Alvarez born 12 September 1841 in Bani, Peravia, Dominican Republic, died on April 17, 1915, and is buried in Jiguani, Bayamo, Cuba. He was a Coronel in the Cuban liberation army. He married Domitila Cruz and had two daughters, Josefa Antonia (who only lived 3 years) and María Mercedes Cristina Marcano-Cruz (1892–1993).

• Gabriel Marcano-Alvarez born in 1840 in Bani, Peravia, Dominican Republic. He fought with the Cuban troops near Havana. He married Elvira Ayala Zayas-Bazan in 1873 in Havana, Cuba and they had six daughters, Maria de las Mercedes, Luisa Maria, Maria de Jesus, Elvira Maria, Virginia Maria, and Mercedes Cristina Marcano-Ayala (who married Alonso del Portillo-del Junco).

There is a street in Bayamo, Cuba named Calle Hermanos Marcano.
