Manoj Mitra is a Bengali Indian actor, director and playwright.[1]

He studied at the Scottish Church College of the University of Calcutta where he earned his B.A. degree. During his final year at Scottish Church College, he formed a theater group called Sundaram with colleagues like Parthapratim Chowdhury and others.[1] Later he would compose plays and work with other theater directors like Ahindra Chowdhury and Parthapratim Chowdhury. He also wrote books on theatre and retired as a professor of drama from Kolkata's Rabindra Bharati University.
At present he is the President of the Paschimbanga Natya Akademi (Govt. of West Bengal).
He has acted in films by a diverse variety of directors such as Tapan Sinha, Satyajit Ray, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Basu Chatterjee, Tarun Majumdar, Shakti Samanta and Goutam Ghosh.
He is best known for his role as a gardener in Tapan Sinha’s film Banchharamer Bagaan, which was based on Mitra's play Sajano Bagaan (The arranged garden).[2]
