The service was created by Melon Media. Melon Media has since created a separate company 89n that ManageFlitter is a part of. ManageFlitter was launched in February 2010 and a commercial version launched in February 2011. In October 2011 the commercial versions were extended to offer multi-account management.
Originally the service was called "ManageTwitter" [3] but was forced to change its name to "ManageFlitter" by Twitter under trademark infringement.
There was some controversy when Twitter alleged ManageFlitter was breaking its Terms of Service.[4] However ManageFlitter and Twitter reached a compromise and the service has been able to operate continuously with no concerns by Twitter.
ManageFlitter is predominantly used by Twitter users to see who is not following them back. They can then analyse this group a variety of ways and choose to unfollow them if they wish. ManageFlitter had helped 469 818 354 people for 461 649 users as of November 14, 2011. The bulk of ManageFlitter users use the free account.
The company behind the service is based in Sydney, Australia and its chief executive officer is Kevin Garber and its CTO is James Peter. ManageFlitter's business model is a freemium model, which started in February 2011, which allows users to continue using the service for free, but requires that they pay for additional features beyond the basic service. As of November 2011, the service manages has helped over 450 000 people manage their Twitter account.
ManageFlitter is now part of 89n. 89n is a bootstrapped company with no external funding. A localized version of ManageFlitter is available in Brazilian Portuguese and more languages are planned to be added.
ManageFlitter was awarded 39th place in the Australian Anthill SMART100 2011 awards [5] and was awarded 17th place in the readers' choice section.[6]
