Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Madipakkam had a population of 14,940. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Madipakkam has an average literacy rate of 88%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 90%, and female literacy is 85%. In Madipakkam, 9% of the population are under 6 years of age.

Connectivity

There are a lot of buses that connect people to the nearest suburban railway station which is St. Thomas Mount, abt 5km, North. Another suburban railway station near Madipakkam is Pazhavanthangal. Autorickshaws are very commonly used but are considered a little expensive. A few horse carriages still come from St. Thomas Mount station but are seldom seen these days. The Velachery MRTS station is nearer than the St. Thomas Mount Station, about 5km in North, and takes a major load of commuters from Madipakkam towards the main city. The Inner Ring road project work has started on the Madipakkam side connecting the incomplete leg of 6 km to Ashok Nagar. The junction where Medavakkam High/Main Road [N-S] & Madipakkam Main Road[E-W] connects is referred to as Koot Road. This name comes from the Tamil word 'kootu' which means 'junction'. The Velachery side of Madipakkam is being referred to as the MRTS Madipakkam due to its proximity to the Velachery Railway Station a project under the Mass Rapid Transit System. High rise apartments are fast replacing individual houses in this area. The area has undergone rapid development since the Railway Station at Velachery, abt 3km in East, started operation from 2008.
