Madhavaram (Tamil: மாதவரம்) is a greater municipality in Thiruvallur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Madhavaram is one among the nine taluks namely Ambattur, Gummindipoondi, Ponneri, Uthukkottai, Tiruvallur, Poonamallee, Tiruttani and Pallipattu, Madhavaram of Thiruvallur district.[1] Madhavaram is a Northern Suburb of Chennai city. National Highway 5 (NH 5) passes through this area.

The Madhavaram taluk was formed on 1st July 2009 following the bifurcation of the large Ambattur taluk, which consisted of five fircas. The new taluk consists of two fircas (Madhavaram and Red Hills) and 36 revenue villages.It is the ninth taluk in Thiruvallur district.[2]
Madavaram is located at [3]. It has an average elevation of 13 metres (42 feet).
As of 2001[update] India census[4], Madavaram had a population of 76,793. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Madavaram has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 70%. In Madavaram, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
During 2001-2011, Madhavaram registered a population growth of 56 percent with a 2011 population of 118,525.[5]
Madhavaram is a northern suburb in the city of Chennai. It borders madhavaram Milk Colony to the east, inner Ring road to the west and Ponniammanmedu to the south. GNT Road (NH 5[Chennai-Kolkata Highway]) passes through Madhavaram.
GNT Road and Inner Ring Road intersect here in Madhavaram and the place of intersection is popularly known as "Bypass"(now renamed as "Nethaji Circle") . The main throughfares in the area are Madhavaram High Road( from Bus stand heading towards Perambur), Thattankulam Road and GNT Road ( From Moolakadai junction to Byepass [Nethaji Circle])
In the interest of the economy and trade and to decongest the Central Business District, CMDA has developed the Truck Terminal at Madhavaram over an extent about 100 acres (0.40 km2) at the cost of about Rs. 6 crores. It is located near the junction of 100 feet (30 m) Road and the GNT Road, with easy access to Chennai city, port and railways. The terminal has been functioning since 1992. The objective of the project is to provide modern and functionally efficient truck terminals for the city, beneficial to the transport operators, lorry booking agents and general public.
Madhavaram has a good number of educational institutions catering to the residents of the area. Most notable schools are Government Higher Secondary School, Vruksha Vidhyaashram (CBSE) School, St.Ann's Mat.Hr.Sec. School, Bosco Academy, Padma Prakash Mat.Hr.Sec School, St.Anne's Girls School, St.Joseph's Mat.Hr.Sec. School, Ramakrishna Mat.Hr.Sec.School and St.Thomas' School. A good number of students pursue their graduation here in Agarsen College.
Madhavaram has a good number of organizations. The most notable organization is "West Cancer Trust". They are creating cancer awareness among the people, counseling them and screening for the rural mass and students community.
Madhavaram is a newly formed state legislative constituency with a more than 2 lakh voters. It consists of areas like mathurmmda, manali, milk colony, madhavaram, puzhal, redhills, sholavaram and vadakarai. It was divided from the biggset taluk of tiruvallur i.e Ambattur. In it's first election V.Moorthy, District Secretary of AIADMK won by defeating DMK canditate with a margin of 34,000 votes.
Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) runs passenger buses to Madhavaram from other major parts of Chennai. A bus terminus had been built in the yesteryears which serves the residents. The bus routes operated from here are 38H to Broadway, M48A to Ambattur Ind.estate and 170A to Vandalur Zoo. Though the frequency of buses are less from Madhavaram Bus Terminus, most commuters used to board the buses in Thapalpetti bus stop where they can get more buses which come from Mathur/Manali. Share Autos play an important role for transportation here. As there is no railway line passing through Madhavaram, residents normally go to Perambur (which is the nearest railway station) to travel in trains.
Perumal kovil street ,Palaniappa Nagar, Thapalpetti, Sivasakthi nagar, Mandaiveli, Bharathiyar Street, Rajaji Street (Agraharam Street), Pukraj Nagar, VRD Nagar, Swami Nagar, Bus Stand, Market, KKR Town, KKR Garden, KKR Nagar, Vathiar Thottam, St Joseph Garden, Malliga Garden(Near St. Joseph's School), Omakulamedu, Ponniammanmedu, Ravi Garden, Assis nagar 1 to 8 streets and Seethapathy Street are some of the neighbourhoods.
There is a kailasanathar Temple in Madhavaram which is believed to be 1300 years old. Also a big Vishnu Temple is present here which has a huge Hanuman statue in a welcoming pose. Apart from these, there are some small temples in the locality. St.Sebastian's Church in Thapalpetti is very popular among the few Churches in Madhavaram. CSI Arul Church is in MTH Road.
St. Anthony’s hospital and Murari Hospital are the two main hospitals in Madhavaram. Apart from these, there are few nursing homes and clinics in aiding the people here.
An ornamental garden on an 18-acre site is being developed for which the founding stone was laid on 15 September 2010. The garden has been planned to be developed in a year. It is being developed at a cost of INR 59.3 million. The proposed facility would have different types of flowers and also a herbal garden along with a nursery. Fountains, a birds' sanctuary, an auditorium and a child play area are other facilities being developed in the garden.
The Horticulture Training Centre in Madhavaram would also be upgraded to Horticulture Management Institute at a cost of INR 39 million.[6]
