Madambakkam is a panchayat town in Kancheepuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It borders Selaiyur, Vengaivasal and Sithalapakkam.

Temple

Madambakkam is known for its historic Shiva Temple of Lord Dhenupureeswarar, believed to be revamped during the tenure of Kulothunga Chola. The temple itself is said to have built during the period of the Parantaka Chola II (Sundara Chola), around 956-973 A.D. It has got beautiful sculptures and different postures of Shiva. There are more than 18 different special temples around the shiva temple which is formed in an Om shape.

The Gajaprishta Vimana temple contains inscriptions ranging from the period of Cholas through Sundara Pandya to Vijayanagara kings. The inscriptions reveal that the original name of Lord Dhenupureeswarar was Sittreri Udaiya Nayanar and that of Goddess Dhenukambal was Nampirattiyar.

The Mandapa through which visitors pass to see the main deity belongs to the Vijayanagara period.

The Madambakkam is highly residential area where,the population is a mixture of Tamil and North Indians. Fast growing area occupied by IT people. There are lot flats constructed at Madambakkam (like Badal Homes, Jain Apts, Hansa Garden etc.,) due to good water facility, schools.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Madambakkam had a population of 16,556. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Madambakkam has an average literacy rate of 82%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85%, and female literacy is 78%. In Madambakkam, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

One of the greatest thing available in Madambakkam which is equal to the World Heritage Site is Dhenupureeshwar Temple where Lord Shiva appeared as Svayambu. Lord Dhenukambal is also there. And further inside Madambakkam Noothancherry a village where the people mainly rely on agriculture is there where crops like maize etc. are grown.
