Lunds and Byerly's are upscale supermarkets in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area of Minnesota. They are both owned and operated by Lund Food Holdings, Inc.
Lunds was founded as Hove's in the early twentieth century at the corner of Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis. Russell Lund, Sr., an employee, took an equity stake in the cheese and cracker department in 1922 and after founding a popcorn business, a larger stake in 1939. The chain took the Lunds name in 1964. The first Byerly's was opened in 1968 in Golden Valley, Minnesota by Don Byerly. Lunds acquired Byerly's in 1997.
As of 2006 there are 10 Lunds stores and 11 Byerly's in the Twin Cities area. Lunds opened its latest store on November 2, 2006, located at Central and University Avenues in SE Minneapolis. Its services include PrairieStone Pharmacy, Caribou Coffee, White Way Cleaners, and Bachman's Florist.
In September 2006, Lunds and Byerly's launched its online grocery shopping service. Shoppers have the option of either picking up their groceries at certain Byerly's stores or having it delivered to their home. There are plans to build a smaller Lunds store on Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis to serve a growing urban customer base.
