History

Lumen Christi Catholic High School was opened in 1968 as a result of the determination of the Catholic Community of Jackson to build a modern educational high school that would serve the varied educational needs of all the Catholic Youth of Jackson. Our school is under the direction of the Bishop of Lansing, through the Diocesan Board of Education, and advised by the Policy Committee and the Financial Planning Committee. We are supported and maintained by the following Catholic Parishes: St. Joseph, St John the Evangelist, St. Mary Star of the Sea, Our Lady of Fatima, Queen of the Miraculous Medal, St Rita, St. Catherine Laboure; and St. John, Albion. The total area of our school encompasses 172,700 square feet. The educational concept of the interior presents a departmentalized system with practical flexibility to meet new and changing educational demands. Vital to the education of our students is a comprehensive Resource Center and Library with seating capacity of 265. The 180-foot diameter domed gymnasium seats 3000 people for athletic and community events along with both a wrestling and weight room. The cafetorium (combined cafeteria and auditorium) with complete kitchen facilities, accommodates 500 for dining and approximately 700 for assemblies or other social functions.

Academics

Lumen Christi follows the philosophy R.E.D. Religion, Education, Discipline. Lumen Christi ranks among one of the finest Catholic Schools in the State. Students are required to commit to 60 community service hours, and to read up to 24 novels in order to graduate. ACT composite average score within the school is 22.6 . The State of Michigan's average is 19.7. In the past 14 years, students have read over 165,000 novels. In the 2009-2010 school year, students invested in over 19,500 recorded community service hours. Since the school opened in 1968, Lumen Christi has had 40 National Merit Finalists and 26 National Merit Scholars. 98% of the school's students go on to pursue a higher education

Performing arts

Band

Lumen Christi has several bands, though they are all one group of people: marching band, symphony band, jazz band, and pep band. In the fall the marching band practices for each home football game and home and away playoff games. The marching band also plays in three local parades-the Jackson Christmas Parade, the Jackson Memorial Day Parade, and the Jackson County Rose Parade. At the end of football season, the band transforms from a marching band into a symphony band. Symphony band participates every other year in the MSBOA festival. On the off years, the band travels either to Walt Disney World, as a marching band, to be in a parade or to Washington, D.C. as a symphony band to perform. Jazz Band usually performs at one or two concerts a year. Jazz Band only uses the last ten to 15 minutes of class on Mondays and Fridays to rehearse, so this band requires a lot of at home practice. The pep band attends three basketball games and usually one hockey game a year. They play the same songs used in marching band during the football season. The band received a division I rating at both the district and state 2008 MSBOA Festivals and again at the 2010 Festivals.

Chorale and Bella Voce

The Lumen Christi Chorale is the school choir. It is a group of about 20 students who meet each day to rehearse. They perform various concerts throughout the year. Until recently, choir was not offered as a class. Up until the 2002-2003, the choir was a club that met each Friday for one hour in the chapel. For the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 school years, choir was held as a class after school everyday until 4:00. Beginning in the 2005-2006 school year, the class was held during the regular school day. Bella Voce is the Women's Ensemble. This ensemble travels, as does the Chorale, to the annual choir festival. In the 2009 - 2010 school year, the Chorale received Superior ratings at both the District and State Choral Festivals.

Drama

The drama program stages two works per year: a fall play and a spring musical. The cast practices almost daily between auditions and the day of the production. Recent productions have included "Our Town", "Grease", "Footloose", "Over Here", "The Man Who Came to Dinner", "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Once Upon a Mattress". The most recently done play was a combination of two one-act plays, "The Lottery" and "The Devil and Daniel Webster", and the most recently done musical was "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat".

Athletics

The athletic teams are known as the Titans and are members of the Capital Area Activities Conference for all sports but football, and the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference for football. In 2012, Lumen Christi will re-join the Capital Area Activities Conference for football.

Football

Lumen Christi is known all over the state of Michigan for having one of the most prominent football programs in the state. michigan-football.com has Lumen Christi ranked number 2 all time for win perentage and all time for playoff win percentage. Head Coach Herb Brogan has just recently entered his 32nd year as head coach of the Titans. Since his time as head coach he has coached a record of 281-68 and a 50-12 playoff record. The Titans have brought back to the city of Jackson 8 State titles (most recent in 2009), 14 Regional titles, and 11 District titles. The Titans sit in the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference (The Big 16) for football only. In 2012, The titans will join the Capital Area Activities Conference gold division and will return the long time rivalry games against Jackson and Lansing Catholic Central.
