Lornado

Lornado is the official residence of the United States Ambassador to Canada in the Rockcliffe Park area of Ottawa.

The 32 room limestone facade 2½ storey manor has been an official residence since 1936. Built in 1908 for American -born Ottawa raised businessman Warren Y. Soper, founder of the Ottawa Electric Railway Company and Ottawa Car Company. It was sold to the Government of the United States in 1935. Mr. Soper named the residence after his favorite novel, Lorna Doone.

The home is located amongst several diplomatic residences and walking distance to Rideau Hall. The home is surrounded by a wall of trees and located above Rockcliffe Park and next to a parkway alongside the Ottawa River.

Access to the home is via Rockcliffe Road, a restricted access road guarded by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Another entrance at Manor Avenue is off limits.

The home is open to guests (embassy staff, their family and other invited persons) on the 4th of July.[1]
