Route E8 was introduced in 1990 to replace the discontinued section of the E1 between Ealing Broadway and Brentford.[2] Along with the E2 service, it links Brentford town centre with Brentford station and the nearby stations on the Piccadilly line.[3]
The route was introduced using Renault / Wright midi buses stationed at Hanwell Garage. When the garage closed they transferred to the new Greenford base. When the E-routes were tendered in 1997 E2 and E8 were transferred from Centrewest to Armchair at the Brentford garage, using new single door Dennis Dart SLF/Plaxton Pointers. When the contracts were renewed in 2002 these two routes' were upgraded to new dual-door low-floor Dennis Darts with Plaxton Pointer 2s with the Armchair's new livery and wheelchair access.[2]
The route was tendered again in 2009, with Metroline, as successor to Armchair, who retained the contract to operate the route in October 2008.[4] The new contract is operated using hybrid versions of the single-decker, lightweight Optare Tempo which started operation in March 2009 alongside Dennis Enviro200s and MCV Evolutions operating out of Brentford garage.[5][6] These buses consume less fuel and emit around 40% less pollutants than conventional buses.[1]
