History

Route 86 was created in 1936. The core route has always been between Stratford and Romford. Originally, 2 buses per hour (4 on Wednesdays) were numbered 86A, which ran between Stratford and Romford, and then running to Upminster via the present-day route 248. The main 86 ran to Gidea Park, with 4 buses per hour from there continuing to Brentwood.

On December 9, 1936 both the 86 and 86A were extended westward to Mile End. In April 1939, the main 86 service was diverted to Limehouse, serving previously unserved territory. On 13 December 1939, the 86 was withdrawn between Limehouse and Chadwell Heath, and the 86A diverted to Limehouse, meaning the 86A now had a much more prominent role, serving new housing estates in the Hornchurch area.

Around 1960, route 86 was withdrawn, and replaced between Romford and Brentwood by route 287. The 86A was renumbered 86, but remained the same, running between Limehouse and Upminster. In the early 1980s, the section between Limehouse and Stratford was withdrawn and replaced with route 225 (which was later replaced by the 278, then abandoned in 1993). At the same time, the section between Romford and Upminster was replaced by an extension of the upgraded route 248, previously a local route in Upminster.

Today, route 86 still runs between Stratford and Romford. The night service is covered by the N86, which runs between Stratford and Romford via the same route, then continues to Harold Hill via Gallows Corner.
