Thrissur or Thrissivaperoor is the ‘cultural capital of Kerala'. The city is a major financial and commercial hub. It is famous for the Thrissur Pooram festival and has a large number of well-known temples. Thrissur has traditionally been a centre of learning. With the decline of Buddhism and Jainism due to the growing supremacy of Brahminism during the revival of Hinduism, Thrissur became an important centre of Sanskrit learning.
Thrissur is also fast becoming the educational capital of Kerala too. With the existence of three medical colleges, proposed medical university, about a dozen engineering colleges, Ayurveda college, Veterinary college, Business schools, well known arts and science colleges, good residential schools makes Thrissur a scholar’s city. Thrissur is also the centre of coaching classes for the aspiring doctors and engineers of the future. Theses coaching classes prepare students for various all-India entrance examinations. Their presence gives Thrissur a distinct aura of being an educational centre of Kerala.
Universities
The Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur, came into existence on February 24, 1971. The university has 10 constituent colleges, six Regional Agricultural Research Stations, 26 Research Stations, three Centres of Advanced Studies, the Central Training Institute, the Communication Centre, and five Krishi Vigyan Kendras.

- 4) Brahmaswom Madham, Thrissur, is the Regional centre of Sree Sankaracharya University, Kaladi for studying Vedas and Sanskrit
- 5) KILA(Kerala Institute of Local Administration) Athani, Thrissur, is the venue for training IAS candidates. There are strong discussions are taking place to convert this to a University.
- 6) Kerala Kalamandalam, Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur dt. is a deemed university dedicated to arts.
