The next morning, Gretchen tells Ryan how sad Kane has been, and Ryan promises he'll do something with his brother soon. Ryan surprises Kane and takes him to Legoland. Kane is thrilled, and Ryan even succeeds in building up his brother's confidence enough to go on one of the big, scary roller coasters. During their time together, Ryan remembers all the fun he used to have when his parents were together and realizes how important it is to help create those types of memories for Kane. After his day out with Kane, Ryan spends time with his friend Casey on the beach, where they talk and run into Tony's ex-girlfriend, Julia. Ryan likes Julia, but Casey thinks Ryan should talk to Tony. Ryan visits Tony hoping to get his blessing to date Julia. It's Ryan's most important competition of the year, and he doesn't want anything messing up his chances of winning the gold medal. Ryan asks Taylor for advice on how to handle the situation. Taylor encourages him to try to see things through Christi's eyes and think about what it must be like for her to try to fit in to a new family. Ryan then has lunch with his dad and says he's going to slowly try to be more accepting of Christi. Ryan’s dad says how hard the divorce has been on him and that he misses being around his boys. Ryan has plenty of other things to deal with before he leaves for L.A.. He has a coffee date with his new love interest, Julia, and invites her to the X Games. Ryan also invites a large group of friends to join him in L.A. The next day, he tells his agent, Steve, that he invited Julia, but Steve thinks that bringing a girl to the games will change the energy entirely. Ryan shrugs off the comment, but it turns out Steve's right. Once Ryan gets to L.A., his father's girlfriend is the least of his worries. Ryan gets to the hotel and learns that Julia has decided not to come. Tony talked her out of it by telling her that she's "just another girl" to Ryan. Ryan confronts his best friend Tony, but he denies any wrongdoing. Ryan hopes this situation won't affect his skating during the competition. Though he has a huge group of supportive friends with him, Ryan doesn't skate his best and almost doesn't qualify for the competition. Making matters worse, he thinks he broke his finger during a fall. His father offers him some tough love but , Ryan really doesn't want the harsh criticism, and he lets his dad know how he feels. Despite his poor performance, Ryan comes in sixth place and gets a shot at the gold at the X Games. The next morning, Ryan learns his dad is "sick" and won't be at the finals to support him. Despite his father not being there, Ryan does some of the best skating of his life, but does not win the gold medal. Claiming fourth place, Ryan leaves the X Games feeling crushed.

Episode 6: "He Said/She Said"

Following his X-Games disappointment, Ryan tries to clear up his situation with Julia. No one can understand why Tony would say something to jeopardize Ryan's new relationship. Tony's denial that he ever said something disparaging about Ryan causes Ryan to really think about whom he trusts more: his longtime friend or Julia. Ryan calls Julia to hear her side, but the conversation goes bad. Ryan is angry and ends his relationship with Julia. While Ryan was trying to be nice, Julia was acting crazy. Ryan drives to Julia's house and breaks up with her. Ryan then makes one more stop at Tony's house. Ryan tells Tony he should never have taken the word of a girl over his best friend's word and apologizes. Tony knew Ryan would come to that conclusion.

Later on that night, Ryan's mother, Gretchen, tells Ryan and his brother Shane that she is stepping back into the dating pool. Ryan thinks back to his parents' good times together as he tries to cope with his mother moving on with her life. He wants her to move on, but he doesn't quite know how it will feel to watch her with another man. A talk with Casey helps him realize that he is one of a minority of kids in his situation and should be supportive of his mother. That night, the boys see their mother getting ready for a date. Gretchen is nervous about her sons meeting the new man in her life. Ryan and Shane greet Gretchen's date, Bruce, at the door and give him the once-over. They are warm and welcoming as Gretchen makes her escape. That night, the boys wait up for Gretchen, who does make it back by "curfew". Gretchen tells her boys that she had a very good time and would like to continue seeing Bruce in the future.

Episode 7: "Down Goes Ryan"

Ryan needs to win the next and final competition on the five-city Action Sports Dew Tour in order to take first place, as he has in past years. He is worried that his relationship with his father will get in the way with him winning. When Ryan visits his dad, Randy, to talk about how he felt abandoned at the X-Games and that he needs constructive criticism to win the gold on the Dew Tour, Randy is not apologetic.

Ryan and his friend Casey have been brainstorming in an attempt to help Casey find a job and learn the business of skateboarding. Casey and Ryan have been friends for a long time, so the boys come up with a plan for Casey to work as Ryan's assistant. Casey plans to do a trial run during Ryan's upcoming trip to Portland, Oregon, for the Dew Tour.

Arriving in Portland, Ryan eases his nerves by calling his dad to make sure he's still coming to the competition. With Randy still on board, Ryan feels like nothing can stand in his way of another first place finish. Casey gets his first taste of what he's gotten himself into as Gretchen gives him a rundown of what he's responsible for as Ryan's new assistant. As Ryan practices mastering his routine for the Dew Tour competition, Gretchen gives Casey his first task -- he must fill out a questionnaire for Ryan. Casey, not knowing his boundaries as an assistant, interrupts Ryan while he's practicing to ask him a question. It's obvious that Casey doesn't understand what it means to be an assistant.

On the morning of the finals, Ryan, Casey, Taylor and Tony all meet to have breakfast. Ryan realizes he left his skateboard in his room and asks Casey to retrieve it for him. This request starts a heated debate between Ryan and Casey about what an assistant is and isn't supposed to do. When he doesn't get his way, Casey storms off in a huff and blows off Ryan's autograph signing.

During the competition, Ryan is riding high until a fall sends him tumbling to the ground. Ryan fears he broke his elbow but with his father cheering him on he finishes in second place. At the hotel, Randy tries to give Ryan a pep talk, but Ryan is too upset to be receptive. Randy tells Ryan that he isn't going to be like everyone else and just give Ryan praise. Randy wants to be the realist who keeps Ryan grounded, and Ryan finally seems to understand the wisdom his father has been trying to instill in him. After heading home, Ryan and his parents go to the doctor to get his elbow examined. It turns out he has broken it and has to have a cast on for a few weeks.
