Ownership / Operation

Stations were formerly generally owned by the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA), bearing its MAXX brand, and the rail infrastructure by ONTRACK / KiwiRail. However, after National government cancelled a regional fuel tax intended to finance the expansion of the network, the resulting funding gap forced the Auckland Regional Council to effectively cede control over the stations to ensure continued maintenance could be financed.

MAXX suburban trains are operated by Veolia, The Overlander long-distance train to Wellington by Tranz Scenic.
