Linden is a city in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,861 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Linden is located in Fenton Township (§20 T5N R6E), Genesee County, Michigan. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.2 km2), of which, 2.4 square miles (6.2 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) of it (1.24%) is water.

History

Linden was established in the 19th century and named after the Linden tree.[3] Downtown centers around the intersection of Broad Street and Bridge Street, where small shops, parlors, and restaurants lined the streets.

On May 18, 2007, a fire destroyed a block of businesses in the center of town on Broad Street.[4] The fire devastated many citizens that cherished the historic feel of the city. However, on November 3, 2008, the LaFontaine family purchased the vacant space. They plan to develop it in the future.[4]

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,861 people, 1,165 households, and 822 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,197.5 per square mile (462.2/km²). There were 1,226 housing units at an average density of 513.1 per square mile (198.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.83% White, 0.07% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.45% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.91% of the population.

There were 1,165 households out of which 30.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.4% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.92.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $50,932, and the median income for a family was $57,798. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $29,758 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,620. About 2.5% of families and 4.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.2% of those under age 18 and 4.9% of those age 65 or over. The city has only one traffic light.
