A referendum on extending the presidential term to eight years (as a one-off measure) was held in Liberia in 1935, in place of elections. The legislation ensured that Edwin Barclay remained in office, and although it was claimed to be for economic reasons, the government feared that an election may lead to instability that would lower confidence of foreign powers and creditors.[1] After its approval by voters, the legislation was enacted. The next elections took place in 1939.[2]
