Leyla ile Mecnun is a Turkish television comedy series. The show is set in Istanbul, Turkey and premiered on 2011 on TRT. The series is a surreal and absurd comedy which revolves around the fictional love story between Leyla and Mecnun. Leyla and Mecnun born in the same hospital and they were put together in the same bed because there weren’t enough beds. That’s why they said: "they found each other from the beginning" and that's why they gave them the names of a sensational love: Leyla ile Mecnun.[1] Mecnun, aged 25, comes from a middle-class family and lives in a historical neighbourhood in Istanbul. Mecnun is confused and messy. From the first moment he saw her, he is in love with Leyla, he is striking and can't stop thinking about her. Leyla comes from a upper-class family. She has a different life than the others in the district. She spends enjoyable time and life gets colorful with Mecnun.Some fantastic events take place in some episodes. For example Dede, who appeared on Mecnun's dreams, has started living with Mecnun to help the lovers. Iskender, father of Mecnun ; A taxi driver who is loyal to his family. As a character who wants the happiness of his son, so he asks Leyla to his son in every chance to make them together. Closest friend of Mecnun; As a character who is well-intentioned, pure-minded and always tries to help Mecnun. He and his father abandoned by his mother. When he was given to someone else by his father who was in deathbed; saying, he will come back with a merchant ship one day. This is the reason maybe his father is in, he waves his hand to passing ships on the shore since that day. Ismail’s house and private life are not shown in TV series. Ismail is unoccupied, he looks for a job, finds a job but every time he fails the job and remains jobless in every episode. Erdal the grocer, the grocer of the district. Erdal who is a greedy, knowing no corner, straight speaking at the same time thoughtless, gauche but also an indispensable character of the district. Erdal the grocer is also a symbol of endangered culture of the district. The grocery of Erdal the grocer is gathering place for the characters. Yavuz the thief. (yavuz means also quick and strong in Turkish (a kind of word game)). Yavuz the thief describes himself as “ a performance artist”. He think there is wisdom in his work. The reason Yavuz keeps on thievery to open the eyes of his blind beloved. Yavuz is a friend of Mecnun and Ismail .Talents of Yavuz are used for the benefit of the people who lives in the district. Yavuz is a character who has never a bad side and always tries to help the people in the district. Arda, who is Leyla's schoolmate, also loves Leyla. Arda's father, who is very rich, tries to break up the relationship between Leyla and Mecnun.[2]
