Cabrera started his career with Defensor Sporting, playing in seven first division matches for the first team, as it won the 2009 Clausura.
In that summer, he signed with La Liga side Atlético Madrid for €1.5 million, paid to former Uruguayan international Daniel Fonseca, who owned the player's rights (and ceded 50% to the Spaniards).[1]
In a strange first season, where he even failed to appear regularly for the reserves, Cabrera's debut for the first team only took place on 2 May 2010, playing as left back in Atlético's 1–3 loss at Sevilla FC; he was also booked in the match.
In the summer of 2010, Cabrera was loaned to Recreativo de Huelva for the 2010–11 season, with the Andalusians in the second division.[2] In the following campaign, in the same predicament, he joined another club in the category, CD Numancia.[3]
