In 2006, as a response to the rapidly growing area around Landsborough station, the Queensland Government announced that it would be radically upgrading the station, with the "north coast" region expected to grow by 150,000 by 2016.[1] The A$2.4m (US$2.2m, £1.33m) renovation was completed in late 2007, and included the building of new facilities, including new platforms, rainwater tanks, shelters, lighting, and toilets; a new cark park was also built. These upgrades are part of a A$275m overhaul of the Caboolture-Landsborough corridor, which includes realigning and duplicating tracks, as well as providing sidings for increased reliability and punctuality.[1] However, only the first phase of this project has been completed (between Caboolture and Beerburrum).
Landsborough station is located in the town of the same name, 82.5 km (51.3 mi) from the Brisbane central business district by rail. More importantly, it is the station closest to the major Sunshine Coast centres of Caloundra, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore, as much of the Sunshine Coast lacks any rail access. In order to address this, the Maroochydore Line is currently planned, with several works on the Nambour and Gympie North Line taking place in preparation.
Landsborough station is on the Nambour and Gympie North Line, the longest interurban line of the Citytrain network. Trains run southbound to Brisbane Central with two stopping patterns south of Caboolture: express to Bowen Hills or express to Bowen Hills stopping at Petrie and Northgate.[2] Trains on both stopping patterns take 78 minutes to arrive at Central station, averaging 63.5 km/h (39.5 mph).[2]
Northbound trains to Nambour take 32 minutes to arrive at an average of 41.8 km/h (26.0 mph).[2] The station is also served by daily Traveltrain electric Tilt Train services to Bundaberg and Rockhampton in Central Queensland.
