Lü Shuxiang

Lü Shuxiang (Chinese:吕叔湘; Pinyin:Lǚ Shūxiāng; 1904–1998) was a noted linguist and language educator, the founder of Modern Chinese studies.

Overview

Lü Haisu (1904–1998) was born in Danyang, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from Foreign Language Department of National Dongnan University in 1926 and then become a teacher in Danyang Middle School and Suzhou Middle School. In 1936, he come to England to continue his academics in Anthropology Department of Oxford University and then in Library Department of London University. After he come back home in 1938, he worked in the Literature and Hisroty Department of Yunnan University as an associate processor, afterwards, he worked as a researcher in Huaxi Union College and Jinling College and a professor in Centural University as well. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Lü was the professor in Chinese Language Department of Qinghua University from 1950 to 1952, starting from 1952, he worked in the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Language. From 1978 to 1985, he was the chief editor of the popular maganize-《Chinese》, from 1980 to 1985, he was the president of Chinese Language Institute. In 1987, he was awarded Honours Degree of Liturature by The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
