Outokumpu is a town and municipality of Finland.
It is located in the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the North Karelia region. The municipality has a population of 7,406 (31 January 2011)[2] and covers an area of 584.06 square kilometres (225.51 sq mi) of which 138.22 km2 (53.37 sq mi) is water.[1] The population density is 16.61 inhabitants per square kilometre (43.0 /sq mi).
The municipality was formerly known as Kuusjärvi. In 1968 it became a market town and was renamed as Outokumpu after the copper mine located in the municipality. Outokumpu gained town privileges in 1977.
The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
The steel manufacturer Outokumpu originates from the city of Outokumpu.
